This series is really only 4 episodes long.

... because the rest of the series drags on, and the ending isn't conclusive. From what we learned, there was some disagreement between the manga artist and Gainax, the former wanted both romance and comedy elements in the anime, while Gainax focuses on mostly comedy.

Hence, up to episode 4 is one complete story of love and comedy, afterwords is mostly comedy and not much else. Fun to watch but you wouldn't miss much if you didn't see it.
