Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika 2014-03-22

Not the usual mahou shoujo anime.

Normally I would stay away from everything made by SHAFT because they have a tendency to ruin the original works, but this anime appears to be a SHAFT original, and it had an all star staff. In the end, it was probably SHAFT's best work so far -- the story was extraordinary, the music was great, and the character design by Aoki Ume was a total winner. This was the most addictive anime compared to all other things that were broadcasting at the same time, and it lived up to all expectations. The ending was a bit depressing (very much like Saishuu Heiki Kanojo type of depressing), but otherwise the whole series was worth watching again and again.

In fact, this series must be watched at least twice. The second time around, you will notice that even seemly trivial bits and dialogs in the earlier episodes actually tie in with the later episodes. The third time around, you will even notice interesting details hidden in the background visuals. The whole series is carefully orchestrated, there are no wasted moments. There are just so many good things about this series ^_^
