Man versus giants.

A story about mankind's fight for survival against the titans. The plot is quite different from everything else that was on air at the time, with some fairly surprising twists. The battle scenes were also unique, particularly in the size disparity between the small humans slashing the large titans (imagine a conventional giant robot anime, but with a unconventional perspective). The story and the action scenes combined makes this series totally worth watching again.

Based on the manga of the same name, the anime covers up to volume 8 of the manga. Compared to the manga, some of the segments seem deliberately slower paced (due to added details not in the original manga), and some episodes are rearranged to better fit chronological order. Other than that, the anime is fairly faithful to the original.
