"Ame no Hi no Airisu" (Iris on Rainy Days) by Matsuyama Takeshi.  A story about robots, told by a robot.  If machines were self-aware in the way described in this book, you will likely think twice before throwing away another piece of hardware.  It's a story worth reading.

All the spoilers are in the cover: the main character for most part of this novel is the badly damaged robot on the left.  The one on the right is killed early on (maimed and dismembered graphically in first person perspective).  After all the depressing bits though, there is a happy ending in the end, and that scene is the cover image.
