"The A.B.C. Murders" and "Murder in the Mews"

"The A.B.C. Murders" and "Murder in the Mews" by Agatha Christie.  The common trait for these is that multiple incidents are more exciting than a single incident.

"The A.B.C. Murders" follows a series of murders that occurred in alphabetical order, and it was indeed exciting because the murders happened in series.  It's not quite to the extent of "And Then There Were None" where there was more killing than crime-solving, but it still managed to keep up the tension all the way to the end, maintaining the impression that the killer always seemed to be one step ahead of the police.  I had wanted to read this book for a long time ever since seeing episodes 15-17 of Hyouka, which turned out to be a decent homage to this book, but with a much more convoluted motive.  "The A.B.C. Murders" had a more conventional motive, but the way it cleverly hides all the evidence in plain sight made it especially worth reading.

"Murder in the Mews" is a collection of four mysteries: a murder that was not really murder, a burglary that was not really burglary, a suicide that was not really suicide, and a love triangle that was actually a different triangle.  I started and finished "The A.B.C. Murders" during on the long outbound flight on a recent business trip, and for the long return flight I didn't have enough energy to finish "Murder in the Mews".  I am glad this book turned out to be not as heavyweight, especially the final story, which went from murder to solution in a mere 6 pages.  Probably not enough meat for people who desired something more substantive, but it was still quite enjoyable.

Captain Hastings said it best in "The A.B.C. Murders":

"The second murder in a book often cheers things up.  If the murder happens in the first chapter, and you have to follow up everybody's alibi until the last page but one -- well, it does get a bit tedious."
