Mechanical watches

Mechanical watches are great! When the zombie apocalypse comes and everyone else can't find their cell phone chargers, I will not be missing any meetings, because I have a mechanical watch.

When my coworkers start playing with expensive bluetooth enabled smart watches, I would just casually take out my pocket watch and announce that this one does not require batteries. And it costs only $20. Actually I could have gotten an even cheaper one, but the books that I was buying at the same time costed less than I expected and I needed a $20 item to qualify for free shipping. For all the laughs I have gotten so far, it's a great deal.

Because it's more premium than the $10 pocket watches, it came with extra features, such as a self-winding mechanism. This works great if I am constantly running away from zombies, or just walk a fair bit throughout the day. It doesn't work quite as well if I sit in meetings all day. My experience over the past month has been it lasts anywhere between 15 to 47 hours depending on whether it was a zombie day or not. Looking at how much the mainspring has uncoiled will tell me which kind of day it was.

But wait, there's more! This pocket watch also features a luminous dial, which means if the apocalypse happened at night, or if it's just the usual summer power outage, I will be able to find my watch. I won't actually be able to tell the time, because the faint glow of the watch face is not sufficient to illuminate the black watch hands. But it doesn't matter, the size and weight of this watch feels just right, so as long as I am holding it in my hands, I know that things are already changing for the better.

I always appreciated these analog things. So last month, right after having done my taxes, I just had the impulse to spend money elsewhere, and turns out these watches (and the books I was looking for) weren't all that expensive. It's nice to be able to see and hear all the gears move, and as long as I remember to rewound it every so often, this watch does indeed keep a pretty good time.
