"Harem e no Kiyoki Tadashiki Route" (His noble and righteous route to the Harem) by Nomura Mizuki, volumes 0 and 1. This was an atypical harem-type story, but actually it is fairly typical after all.
It's unusual to announce that this is a harem story right on the cover, confirming that this novel series is going to follow a very common plot might not be the best way to sell a novel. It's also unusual to start at volume zero, except maybe it's targeting engineers who appreciate 0-based indices. When volume 0 sets up the premise of a king who is liked but not loved by all women, and that the newly wed queen was going to personally help the king build a harem to meet other girls, I thought it was going to be an unusual series.
As the characters develop in volume 1, it seem that it was probably going to be a more typical series after all. The king manages to collect the first girl, while the queen is slowly realizing that she might want to be more than just friends to this nice guy. If neither of these happened, this series could have continue to follow the anti-harem direction where the main character end up pairing with nobody, but that seems unlikely after volume 1. It seems that this series will be more or less predictable, with the queen eventually realizing her true love, and everyone live happily ever after.
It seemed that for this particular author, either all characters are very different and slightly insane (as in the "Bungaku Shoujo" series), or they are all plain but charming (as in the "Dress" series). This series is following the latter approach, which might make it less appealing for new readers, but for fans who have been following this author for a while, it's good to have these "normal" series in between the hardcore ones. Volumes 0 and 1 have been very entertaining, the later volumes would probably be just fine whether they are predictable or not.
