"Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!" (bless this wonderful world!) volume 9 by Akatsuki Natsume. It's all about the explosions.

Despite having been on the covers of all previous volumes and despite actually being quite helpful in this volume, Aqua did not make it to the cover this time. Instead, Megumin gets all the spotlight, justifying her well timed explosions with "I just couldn't resist Kouma clan's instinct to steal the show". This same line would return 3 chapters later, just before another dramatic explosion that finished off another henchman of the demon lord. It was Megumin's show from beginning to end.

All the highlights in the middle are explosions. Constant explosions every day. Explosions that did more damage to army morale than landscape. Explosions as counterattacks to more explosions. Any fantasy novel with this much explosions probably no longer belongs in the fantasy genre, especially after throwing few sticks of dynamite into the mix. But this is Konosuba, where the primary attraction are vivid and flawed personalities in both protagonists and antagonists, and the secondary attraction are explosions. It has been a very satisfying volume.

Besides the explosions, this volume revealed more back story regarding Megumin and her cat, and if I counted correctly, the demon lord should be down to two henchmen left. This novel series is generally making steady progress while making a fine balance between adventures and relationships.

Looking forward to the return of Kazuma's little sister in volume 10.
