"NieR:Automata - Mijikai Hanashi" (Short Story) by Eishima Jun. A collection of short stories for most of the major characters in the game. This is a perfect complement to the first volume in covering extra events and characters, and also fits perfectly on the bookshelf side by side.
"Emil's Memories" made it to this volume, fulfilling my wish from first volume. This story captured the comical and serious moments from the original game, with the added bonus of narrating everything through Emil's perspective. Emil's catchy song is difficult to reproduce in printed form, but all the other extra details came through really well. This chapter alone would have made this second volume worthwhile.
Emil's chapter appears to be the only one that was based off of a side quest in the original game, the other chapters have mostly fresh content. Chapter with the most number of pages was dedicated to the backstory between A2 and Anemone, documenting how A2 and crew were forsaken in the previous battles, and how Anemone came to acquire that name. After A2, the second highest number of pages were dedicated to the relationship and contrasting roles of 2B and 9S. Most of these did not appear in the game, but they fit in with the original events and dialogues very well. For someone who is more of a reader than a gamer, it might even feel like the game is the extension of the two novels.
This second volume had everything I wanted, and there were even decent coverage for the command and operators and machine lifeforms. You might have to be a hardcore Pascal fan to be disappointed, otherwise it is definitely worth reading.
