"No Game No Life" volume 10 by Kamiya Yuu. This volume is about dwarves and technology.
"Dwarves and technology" is a much better summary than breast enlargement, which is a pervasive topic in this volume, discussed at length covering all physical, psychological, and philosophical aspects, with applications in economics and giant robot battles. The author tried really hard to make it a critical element of the story and was fairly successful in that regard, but it wasn't exactly what I was expecting after waiting more than a year for this volume.
What I was expecting were the games and meta games, which centered around a "build your own robot and fight until the core breaks" type of game this time. It is won by cheating pre-game planning as usual, but the most interesting part about the preparations in this volume has to do with dwarven crafts. Care was taken to differentiate "technology" versus "science", in that dwarves had the talent to instinctively build advanced structures, but not the scientific sense to understand what they build. In comparison, humans had the scientific background that allows them to imagine beyond the limits of their innate abilities, and that is what allowed humanity to triumph. These meta concepts are what makes No Game No Life worth reading.
One unrelated observation is in how ruby is used: these are normally used to describe the pronunciation of the corresponding kanji, but light novels often use them to provide multiple interpretations for the same text. Most common usage in No Game No Life is to make "Blank" readable and also to provide western readings to the various races. Volume 10 appears to be more liberal with ruby in given the same text multiple readings, sometimes on the same page. This might have gone on for a while and avid light novel readers will just parse them subconsciously without noticing, but even these readers might pause for a moment when they see a Bruce Lee quote in ruby characters.
No Game No Life has not always been consistent, but this volume is pretty good. There are only a few races that have not made their appearances yet, it should be worth following to the end.
