Sega Genesis Mini, yet another good way to relive the best of the 90s. Many thanks to my brother for this console.
The original Genesis was not as technically advanced as the SNES that was released 2 years later, but that might be something to be expected from 2 years of extra development. So now in 2019, when Sega decided to release their retro console 2 years after the SNES mini, we might expect some extra polish to match that of SNES mini, but no such luck here. The only thing we have is solid emulation of the classics, in their original unforgiving difficulty, without a convenient "rewind" feature to compensate for our aging reflexes.
Actually there is one unadvertised feature: the game console region is a selectable menu option, which means you can play Puyo Puyo 2 if you set language to Japanese (which I have instinctively done when given the choice, because why not). I didn't realize that Puyo Puyo wasn't supposed to be available, so that was a very welcomed bonus on top of an already extensive list of games.
And there lies the reason for why Genesis Mini is worthwhile -- despite the inferior technology relative to consoles old and new, the games are just too much fun to pass. Also note that while the SNES mini have a lot of RPG or long adventures that requires a fair bit of time commitment, many games on the Genesis mini have a more arcade feel that allows you to get your fix quickly.
Sega might have ultimately lost the console wars, but the Genesis is still a timeless treasure.
