"Violet Evergarden - Ever After" by Akatsuki Kana, the extra extra ending to the series.
This is definitely the final volume since it was clearly advertised as such, even though I thought the story was already done in the first two volumes and there was already a bonus volume 3. By the time I noticed that there is this 4th volume, the merchant would only sell these books in sets of 4, so now I have two copies of the first three volumes. I regret nothing.
Since recently I got a bit more time, I went back to re-read the first three volumes again before starting on volume 4, and honestly the story still seemed quite complete. This has to do with the treatment of Gilbert in the different versions: the anime series ended with the finding Gilbert plot in the second movie, but Gilbert was already reunited with Violet back in volume 2 of the novel. Having seen the movies, I wasn't sure what alternative plot was worthy of an "ever after" title. Turns out, it was more backstories, and a critical character development that Violet casually mentions in a letter around page 342, followed by the true ending to the novel series. This volume did indeed made the series more complete.
Even without the extra character growth, I would have been happy to just get more Violet action, and this volume has delivered on that as well. This is one series that still feels heartwarming even after reading it over the second time, and this last volume was more than everything I expected. Would read again.
