The Road to Guitar Hero

The Road to Guitar Hero was better than I expected. It's not exactly high quality content, but that might have made it more inspiring.

This series is bonus material for Bocchi the Rock! anime, and it's a quest for the main voice actress to learn to play the guitar track for the opening song, starting as someone with no guitar experience. It's primarily voice actress content plus a bit merchandise advertisement, with lots of close up shots of Aoyama Yoshino's fingernails and amateur guitar skills. I think these shots are pretty rare -- I am not sure I have seen a lot of hands, but roughly every musician brave enough to publish their videos appear to be pretty good at it, so I don't see a whole lot of videos of inexperienced guitarists. Rare, but not necessarily the kind of thing I would go out of my way to find and watch.

I started watching this series initially because it's more Bocchi, and Aoyama-san's upbeat performance kept me going through the first few episodes. She might be an amateur guitarist, but she is a professional actress, and even normally mundane things like changing the guitar strings were fun to watch. But I wasn't quite watching this as a kind of idol show because you can clearly observe Aoyama-san's guitar skills steadily improve, and her skills has gotten fairly respectable by the final episode. This is why it was unexpectedly good -- it's not exactly professional quality music, but watching the quality gradually improve over the 6 month period was awe inspiring. In the anime, all this growth would have been done in the first 3 minutes of the first episode before we even hear the opening song. This series expanded that development to 3 hours, and I felt I watched of what could have been the prequel to Bocchi the Rock!

Six months might have seemed like a long time to learn a relatively short song, but I can't recall how long it took me to learn my first song, and it was years before I could play the one song I wanted to play. "The Road to Guitar Hero" shows what ~30 minutes of daily practice can do when accumulated over time, and invites all of us to look back at what we have accomplished.
