Kadokawa's Megumin (DX version) is a pretty good model.
My previous experience with building these type of character models were from Kotobukiya's Sousai Shoujo Teien series. For comparison:
| Model | Megumin | Saeki Ritsuka | Yuuki Madoka |
| Runners | 26 | 19 | 20 |
| Parts | 219 | 162 | 139 |
| Printed parts | 20 | 8 | 10 |
| Face parts | 4 printed | 4 printed + 4 blanks with decals | 4 printed + 4 blanks with decals |
| Hair styles | 1 | 3 | 3 |
| Hand variations | 3 bare hands + 3 gloved hands | 7 | 6 |
| Maker | Kadokawa | Kotobukiya | Kotobukiya |
| Release date | 2024 August | 2021 July | 2021 January |
| Initial price | 9900 JPY | 6600 JPY | 5940 JPY |
Note that Megumin DX includes two complete models of Megumin, plus a small model of Chomusuke. With that in mind, the per-unit cost comes out cheaper. Still, I was able to get a new Megumin model this year while all the Sousai Shoujo Teien models were sold out. The availability difference probably says something about the relative popularity of these models. Megumin was Kadokawa's entry into the plastic model business, and the lack of experience might have manifested in some minor annoyances:
I complain about these minor annoyances, because the rest of the building experience was actually pretty good. The models look nice and has roughly the same level of articulation compared to the Sousai Shoujo Teien series. I was especially impressed with how most of the color patterns are done by combining solid plastic parts of different colors. There are no stickers or decals in this kit.
I felt compelled to write this review because I like the color separation so much. And because I thought two copies of Megumin was a really good deal. Kadokawa holds a lot of intellectual properties that would make interesting models, I hope they learn from other makers in fixing the minor annoyances, and make their pricing more competitive. I definitely had a good experience building Megumin.
