"Isekai Goumon Hime" (Torture Princess of Another World) volumes 1-3, by Ayasato Keishi. A battle novel series in a different world, featuring a maid with a large axe.
Actually the maid is not the main character, although she did make it to the cover of volume 2. The main character is the Torture Princess seen on the covers for volumes 1 and 3, and the main plot for this novel series how she fought 14 demons, and finishing them off using various instruments of torture. Majority of the events took place in medieval fantasy world, and most of the events involve gruesome battles where people's various limbs and organs are mutilated all the time. If you can imagine a text version of Berserk being enjoyable, this series will suit you well.
I read the first volume and wasn't sure if I actually enjoyed it. There is a general dark and hopeless atmosphere that is superficially similar to Berserk, but then there are these lighthearted moments that almost inevitably involve food and cooking. The first volume goes by reasonably quickly, especially if you are already used to plenty of blood and gore. I thought I would just read another volume before forming my opinions, and that also went by quickly with more detached limbs plus some clever dealings with the demons. Before I knew it, I was done with volume 3, which completes the first arc of the story at what might have been a proper end for the Torture Princess. The series does continue after that though, and it's taking a turn to resemble more of multi-racial world of No Game No Life in volume 4.
The beautiful cover art must be reason why I started reading this series in the first place, but why I kept on reading was a bit of mystery. The vivid action scenes and the intricate fantasy settings were certainly fascinating, but my main motivation for following this series would be that it features a totally lovable maid character who wields a large axe, and I just had to keep up with where that is going.
